Boot the laptop up and check if the touchpad is working. If this does fix the problem, it could still be a sign that there is some sort of software problem. WebSwift 3 seems to have a number of problems with linux, but the person on that note seemed have gotten most of them resolved. Debian 9 is pretty old. There's a good chance your laptop is newer than it by a few years. Assuming you actually mean 9, I would try with 10 using the non-free ISO to see if anything improves.
